The fact that Iker Casillas has been selected by FIFA/FIFPro as the world’s best goalkeeper should come as no surprise. The Madridista keeper has received numerous accolades on both an individual and team level and is a star both on and off the field.

Last year he was recognized by IFFHS as the top goalkeeper and included in UEFA’s Team of the Year for the second year running. He was also the 2007/08 Zamora Trophy winner, the best goalkeeper in the most recent Euro two summers ago, the 2000 Bravo Award winner, the best goalkeeper in La Liga in 2008 according to UEFA.com readers and the best Spanish player in 2008 according to a panel of experts representing all Primera Division teams. What also must be taken into account is that Casillas is only 28 years old, leading one to belief that he has plenty of accolades yet to receive.
